Tell us why you became a teacher

I was inspired by the wonderful and supportive teachers who encouraged me to always be the best I can be and to take chances. I loved helping others understand things. I remember explaining things to my younger sister and cousins when they didn’t quite understand something and it always felt so rewarding when they finally understood. I think I loved the feeling of making a positive impact and connection that came with sharing the knowledge I learned and now I can do the same with my students.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One student who really stuck out to me was we “B.” He was reading on a kindergarten level in fourth grade. He would act out in school and do anything to have the other kids laugh at him. One day, he realized he had enough. He asked if he could come upstairs at lunch time and read with me. We worked together everyday for three months during lunch and he began reading on his own at home. By the end of the school year, he was almost on grade level. What a success story!

What would you do with the $25,000?

With the $25,000, I would use a substantial amount to upgrade my classroom resources so that my students have the technology they so desperately need. For one thing, I would purchase several computers so that my students could use them to conduct research, practice skills using educational games, use a digital library, create presentations using PowerPoints, etc. I would also further my education so that I can deepen my expertise in the field of Special Education, something so special to me.
