Tell us why you became a teacher

When I was in fourth grade. I struggled with math. Due to my mom working two jobs, I didn’t get a lot of help at home. Fortunately, I was blessed to have an awesome teacher named Mrs. Wilson, who made learning fun. With my struggles in math, she made the time to work with me each day, after school. With her extra help, I became more confident in math. With her love and dedication to not only me, but to all of her students, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to be like Mrs. Wilson!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience can be best described as more of a learning experience for me. I was teaching first grade and one of my students on a Friday asked me if I had a girlfriend, in which I told him that I didn’t have a girlfriend. I thought that that was a weird question to ask me. On Monday, titled, “How to Get a Girlfriend,” which was written by kids. He then said to me, “Read this, it will work!” The funny thing is, I did get a girlfriend shortly after!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I teach at a Title 1 school, and spend myself spending my own money on things that I use in my classroom. I would most definitely use the money to purchase things that will enhance their learning experience. I would very much like to buy some iPads for my classroom for skill development. Also, currently, each grade level at my school gets one field trip per year. I would also use the money to provide at least two more field trips now and each year after. I just want to give them the best!
