I’m an elementary physical education teacher and for some of these kids this is their one part of the day where they truly excel!

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of the wonderful teachers that I have had in my life. I grew up in a very unstable home and school was the only place where I had consistency and normalcy. My elementary PE teacher as well as my high school math teacher were two people who stood out to me who were more than just teachers. They were my support system. They were someone who showed that they cared. I got into teaching so I could be that person for my students.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was not in the classroom, it was an email from a parent that I will never forget. I had a rough week, I was questioning why I was in education as the country seemed to be turning on teachers as a profession. In comes an email from a parent, thanking me for all that I have done for her child. She said that her student did not like school but NEVER wanted to miss a day that he spent with me in the gym. That simple thank you made me realize why I do what I do.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With the $25,000 I would first pay off my debt and then put some money towards items that I never thought I would be able to add to my gym for my students. In addition, I would put some of the money towards professional development. There are many amazing physical education professional developments that I would love to attend from Shape America to the Elementary Physical Education Workshop that I wish I could attend but just cannot afford. These PD opportunities would benefit me and my students
