I love having the ability to introduce my students to great pieces of literature and engaging them in meaningful discussions.
Thank you for supporting Melissa Agar in this year's competition. Your donations and participation will benefit The Planetary Society in their mission to advance space exploration, inspire discovery, and empower the next generation of innovators.
I knew I wanted to do something that would make the world a better place. What better way to help make a better future than educating the future? I loved the idea of working with students to develop their world views, engage in critical thinking, and discover their talents. They challenge me to be better, to push myself to be the best I can be. This is my legacy to the world.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceAfter 25 years, I am filled with memories -- engaging discussions, beautifully written papers, et cetera. The thing that first springs to mind is really a simple moment. It was about six years ago. I had a class that I was just struggling with in terms of engagement. At the end of class one day, a student looked at me and said, "Ms. Agar, this is my favorite class." I thanked her, and then her friend said, "No, that is a huge deal! She HATES English classes, but she LOVES this class!"
What would you do with the $25,000?I would love to use some of the money to help my students by donating to our compassion closet to help students with basic needs. We live in a high poverty district, so helping keep toiletries and clothes on our shelves for kids would be huge. I would also try to bolster some of my classroom resources -- buying some novel sets, some new furniture and equipment.
