Connect Tell us why you became a teacher

My passion in life is sharing my love of music with others. I believe that I have the ability to use my subject matter to show my students HOW they matter. Through teaching I have the responsibility to positively model leadership, cooperative learning skills, problem solving, and team building strategies. Students leave my class with a deeper appreciate of music, and at the same time become better prepared for their future careers. The absolute gift in teaching comes from the lightbulb moments!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The proudest moment I've had as an educator came from tragedy in 2020, when we suffered a 500 year flood and dam burst that forced many community members to evacuate leaving over $200 million in damage. Our band members rallied together to help families pull the contents of their homes to the curb in an opportunity to give back to the community that had supported them at concerts, parades and through fundraisers. Community outreach is a big part of our classroom curriculum. They lead by example.

What would you do with the $25,000?

In my 24 year teaching career I've spent the majority of my time working at the school in preparation for performances, camps, competitions, and as a coach of both cross country and track. This includes a large portion of summer vacation. If awarded this prize, I would treat my family to the dream vacation we have never been able to afford. As my children grow older and are now entering college, I realize the best gift I can receive (whether I win or lose) is quality time spent with my family.
