Matthew Inouye

I love teaching because I get to lift up my amazing students, cultivate leaders, and give back to the school community that shaped me.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became an educator because I wanted to help students overcome challenges, and give the gift back that was given to me. I was a special education student when I was in school. So filling those gaps & giving a fair opportunities is my life mission.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience is training students in restorative practices to become facilitators. Seeing them graduate and thank me for the tools I gave them, which helped them land their first jobs, was incredibly rewarding. It’s a reminder of the lasting impact we can have as educators.

What would you do with the $25,000?

First, I’d pay off my remaining student loans. With the rest, I’d reinvest in the classroom, as our district faces a budget deficit. I’d also use it to send educators to professional development on restorative practices and restorative justice to expand our impact.
