Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted to help people. Initially I thought I was going to be a psychologist, but then I volunteered to coach a pee wee basketball team in college. I fell in love with teaching kids the game and helping them grow as young men. I never looked back. Once inside the classroom, I prioritized relationships, safety and learning. Now I’ve taught high school geography for 15 years and wouldn’t want to do anything else.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

There are so many. I’ve learned from so many excellent teachers. I worked at a Title 1 school for 14 years. Some of my favorite memories working with kids preparing for AP exams after school, being a basketball coach and mentoring young men, and helping solve school problems with an amazing group of educators. By far the best part these days is hearing from former students/players. Getting to catch up with them and see their families and celebrate their successes.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I was blessed with $25k I’d put some of the money back for my own kids future. I’d use a bit to celebrate with my family probably. I’d try and invest some of it back into my classroom for resources that can help my students.
