Tell us why you became a teacher

I was a very shy student growing up. I was involved in music and started playing the flute in the 4th grade. I had excellent music teachers who saw me and helped me overcome some of my physical challenges. They imparted their love of music on me and that’s why I became a teacher. I, in turn, do the same for my students!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Wow! There are so many to choose from in the 45 years I have been teaching! I would say that one of them was when a former student that I had in elementary school decided to major in music. After she graduated, she accepted a position with the Virginia Opera. She came back to perform at our school in one of the productions and told the students about the impact that I had on her life and her career choice. I was so proud of her and her accomplishments.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would spend the money on my students! First, I would ask my students what they think we need or want in our classroom and then go from there. In addition, I would like to bring in local artists to give my students more hands on experiences.
