Tell us why you became a teacher

Having been diagnosed with ADHD early on, I deeply connect with those who struggle and feel misunderstood. I wanted to help others like I had growing up. As a teacher, I advocate for my students, fighting for their rights even when they might not recognize their needs. My teaching philosophy centers on loving my students first before teaching. My life experiences have uniquely prepared me to be a special education teacher. I stand up for the underdog and strive to ensure every voice is heard.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I constantly research items for my students. I found a device called My Functional Hand, which helped my students with cerebral palsy hold a writing tool by themselves for the first time! Seeing them make marks on paper on their own was magical. I also have memories of my students walking for the first time. As a severe and profound special education teacher, witnessing their faces light up is incredible. Additionally, when a nonverbal student speaks for the first time, it is always cherished!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the money to get a gift for each of my special education students to support their learning at home. Paying off my debt would be another priority, giving me peace of mind. After completing my PhD this summer, I'd love a refreshing vacation as a reward. I will also invest in a special education resource room at my school, equipping it with adaptive technology and tools to enhance learning. This opportunity isn't just financial; it's about enacting meaningful change and touching lives.
