Tell us why you became a teacher

Initially, I wanted to be an actress. As my colleagues say, I have that “main character energy” that fills the room and hypnotizes kids with wonder, awe and a lot of laughter. However, the daily moments of joy, the bewilderment in students’ eyes, and individual “a-ha!” moments shared with so many singularly unique people I met in these almost 20 years teaching, were what made my career such an incredibly fun, purposeful and rewarding journey.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Most people don’t understand that the growth and miracles experienced in special education classrooms would go unnoticed, or worse, might never surface at all, without the meticulous IEP strategies and consistent dedication of their teachers. My most memorable experience teaching was when a 16 yo non-verbal student called my name from across the room. I’d been hurrying about busily putting things away after a great fun-filled day, and she said my name, loud and clear. Everyone cheered and cried!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would be very grateful and relieved to be able to replace a big chunk of my son and 2 daughters’ college fund I depleted getting my own Masters in Exceptional Student Education. Ultimately, it would greatly impact our family’s quality of living. It would give my single income family hope and comfort during the toughest times we have ever faced.
