I love seeing kids grow in their knowledge, ability, confidence and character. There’s nothing like playing a part in someone’s development.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I was originally studying to go into nursing, working at the YMCA as an after school tutor in college. I had to quit my job and move to begin nursing classes, and after a semester missed my kids at the Y so much that I changed majors to go into elementary education.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I’ve spent my career working in inner city/low income schools. I wish I could say my most memorable teaching experiences are happy; they’re not. They’re the kind that are human, that hurt your heart and make you cry, wishing you could change anything in that child’s life. But out of those moments have come pretty memorable notes - handwritten “thank you’s” and “I love you’s” that echo the power a teacher has to help a young person cope and learn resilience, as well as to read and to think.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would probably put a big chunk of it toward my house and student loans, but also take a vacation and buy books and supplies for my classroom.
