Tell us why you became a teacher

As a child, I moved from state to state constantly. The idea of starting a new school every 3 years was daunting; not to mention I struggled with academics. The only constant was knowing I'd have a kind teacher there to help me. From 3rd grade on, I always had an ally in my teachers. They supported me, understood my needs and created a safe space for me to enjoy. These teachers impacted my life so much, that I knew from the age of 8 teaching is exactly what I wanted to do.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

It's difficult to pinpoint one exact memory. A teacher is ever changing, improving and growing; just like our students. My most memorable feelings are all around the times when a student has helped me just as much as I've helped them. Sometimes, it's a silly game where we get to laugh together, sometimes it's the gift of an illustration that shows me I'm loved. Most often, it's the students who come back to visit, reminding me I matter to them even when they've outgrown 5th grade.

What would you do with the $25,000?

After painstakingly yet responsibly moving part of the prize into my savings account, I'd definitely consider some things I both need and want. First I'd look into owning a home; something I've never been able to afford. Next, my family lives far away so I'd definitely put some of that prize towards flights and trips to visit all of them. Ideally, I'd still have some left over to go on adventures to exotic places I've never been and of course I'd save a portion for tissues and pencils!
