I became a teacher because I had several teachers that helped me in school. Math and reading were really difficult for me and in high school I had two teachers who would work with me in class and after school to re teach the content I did not understand. They made a huge difference and I want to be able to help others who may have a similar situation academically or socially.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable experience in teaching was when I started a lunch bunch group for 8th grade. This was during lunch every Friday and started as a way for students who struggled to develop friendships meet others and play board games. I had one student who was very quiet and often would not eat but go to the library away from peers. After several weeks of invites he finally came to the lunch bunch. A peer asked him to play chess and he was so happy! He came every Friday after that for the year!

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000 my husband and I would use the money to help our children. We have three children with special needs: two with autism and one with ADHD. All need additionally support to meet their academic and social needs. The $25,000 would be a huge help in paying for this. We have also dreamed of taking our boys on a vacation at some point to Disney Animal Kingdom or one of the large national parks. Our kids love animals and have always wanted to go places to learn more about them.
