Making First Grade fun while still learning is my passion. Kids have lots of time to be grown ups, let’s let them be kids first.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I have always loved being around children and worked in a preschool setting for 18 years before becoming a teacher. When my oldest son went to First Grade, his teacher was amazing. He was the only new student in first grade and she took him under her wing. It was then I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to be the reason a child and family loved school.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

A new family had moved into town and this little boy started in October. Very shy and quiet. He was very low and very far behind. He was embarrassed that he couldn’t keep up. I pulled him aside and told him I was a safe place and that he could tell me anything and I would do whatever I could to help him. He said all he wanted to do was read like the other children and asked if he could stay in at recess to work on it. We did that for the rest of the year. He is my biggest success story.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I think I would remodel my bathroom. I have 4 sons who are older now and everything we had went to them. We made sure they had nice vacations and everything they needed so this would be nice to give the bathroom a little update.
