Tell us why you became a teacher

My inspiration is my son Max who has Downs and Autism. I love working with kids with challenges. Every year I teach, I learn more about what student I was. I was one of the challenging kids. I fought, argued, cursed, and defied my teachers at times, yet I had teachers in my corner. They cared about me and showed it. They planted something inside my heart that allowed me to believe I could change my path despite my circumstances. They poured into me.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I lead Bruins Unite Inclusion Leadership club. It is where students with and without disabilities spread the culture of inclusion. We have students with all kinds of abilities. Often people do not know how to interact with kids who are different. One activity involved parachute games. I had a student with Autism and one with Down syndrome who usually does not participate, but this day they both did. Now they are the most popular kiddos at Central with the friends they have made!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would take a much needed vacation with my two boys and husband! We would travel to the states on our bucket list. For my classroom, I would apply funds to bring my students on field trips to expose them to as many opportunities as possible. I love to fish, so I would also buy a new fishing rod!
