Tell us why you became a teacher

I have always wanted to work with children. It’s been my dream. I love early childhood and how quickly and rapidly they grow and change. I fell in love with special education after completing some observation hours. I am now a special education teacher at a private school and my son has Down syndrome. Most of my students have autism and limited communication abilities. I love what I do and impacting their lives. I have a unique perspective as both a special education teacher and parent.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

This is my first year teaching. I have had a lot of ups and downs. The most memorable thing for me is when my students get what I am teaching them. When the concept clicks and I see the connections are being made. We celebrate the small moments and victories in my class. I have been working on line tracing with a student. When the student finally held the marker correctly, and made the lines, my entire class cheered. It was a beautiful moment.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won, I would buy supplies and things for my classroom. I work at a private school for students with disabilities. We receive little to no funding. I purchase all of my own things for my classroom. Most of my students have autism and are sensory seekers. I would love to be able to provide more sensory toys/equipment for my classroom/school. I want to be able to improve the learning environment for my students.
