Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I was a miserable (emotionally and academically) student. I was inspired by both skilled and incompetent teachers to be the kind of educator who encourage kids who struggle with school.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Nearly forty years ago, on my first day as a teacher, a student put his head down on his open binder. The rings snapped shut and cut his forehead, causing blood to stream down his face and all over his desk. I thought, “my teaching career can only improve from here.”

What would you do with the $25,000?

I spent the first part of my teaching career without a college degree. In 2012, at age 50, I took a break from teaching to get my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. I would use the prize money to help pay off my student loans.
