Tell us why you became a teacher

When I was in 5th grade, I dreamed of being a kindergarten helper, a role where we guided kindergarteners to lunch and recess. I wrote stories about it and eagerly signed up, but I was devastated when I wasn’t chosen. That disappointment stuck with me, but it also inspired me. I told myself that one day, I’d take it one step further and become a kindergarten teacher—and here I am, living that dream.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

During the pandemic, I taught kindergarten in person at a private school/daycare, maintaining social distancing while offering hands-on learning. Midyear, two students joined my class who were severely behind due to virtual learning in public school. I differentiated instruction, and by year’s end, they were reading at grade level. Their parents thanked me for restoring their child’s love for school, but I told them no thanks were needed—it’s simply my job.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I plan to transform my classroom into a play-based learning environment. Research shows that learning through play helps students retain more information. I would purchase supplies like dramatic play sets to teach cultures and social skills, as well as STEM materials to encourage critical thinking and creativity. These tools will challenge my students and provide them with a richer, more engaging learning experience.
