Connect Tell us why you became a teacher

I became an English teacher because I want to inspire my students to become lifelong learners and to believe in their own ability to grow and succeed. I know firsthand how challenging learning can be—I couldn’t read until the third grade, and for years, I struggled with something that seemed to come easily to others. However, once I finally learned how to read, my entire world expanded. Books became a gateway to new ideas, perspectives, and possibilities I had never imagined.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was at Hope Christian Academy, a school and nonprofit where I lived on campus and earned $1,200 a month while teaching students from failed adoptions and foster care. Many had physical and mental disabilities, including RAD (Reactive Attachment Disorder). Despite the challenges, it was incredibly rewarding to break through barriers and see my students succeed. Watching them grow and eventually graduate made every hardship worthwhile.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would continue supporting students in low socioeconomic communities by providing essential supplies the district cannot always reach. I also teach alternative summer school, where many students lack resources. This funding would help expand after-school programs, ensuring kids have access to materials and opportunities they need to succeed. It would make a lasting impact by giving students the support necessary to thrive in and beyond the classroom.
