Tell us why you became a teacher

Growing up I had a love for children that started early on with babysitting. I did dream of becoming a pediatric nurse, but math was not my strong suit. The choice was then simple, early childhood education to become a teacher and continue to grow my love for children. It’s a true blessing to wake up every day as an inner city school teacher and know that I am truly making a difference and touching the lives of the students, even beyond the classroom!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The 2016-2017 school year was my first year that I was employed by an actual school district and not a charter school. That year I was blessed with a group of 13 second graders, yes only 13! My scholars became leaders in the classroom. By January, I was walking into a student led morning meeting and bell work review. I’ll never forget sitting in a student desk and looking around in awe at how much my students had grown, not only in academics, but in maturity and responsibility.

What would you do with the $25,000?

As a single mom to 10 year old twins boys, I would first put aside a larger portion of money for their future education. With any remaining money, I would plan a trip for the three of us to experience somewhere different together. The money would allow me to not stop and question, can I even afford a vacation right now, and rather allow the three of us to enjoy a time away together.
