My second-grade teacher, Mrs. Peterson, kept a parakeet in the classroom and chose students to babysit it. When she picked me, I felt special. In seventh grade, Mrs. Jennings called me “Shorty” and hugged me when my father underwent a sudden major surgery, reminding me I wasn’t alone. My choir teacher, Mrs. M, pushed me to new musical heights, building my confidence. Their support and encouragement inspired me to become a teacher who makes students feel valued, respected, and important.

In 2022, I completed a leadership program at the University of Connecticut. Applying my new skills, I proposed a transitional kindergarten program to my board of education to support young children's social development—and it was unanimously approved! I also designed the program as an internship for aspiring high school students, bridging two different age groups. Now in its third year, this program continues to thrive, and I couldn’t be more proud.

With this money, I would first give back to my community by creating a scholarship for students pursuing a career in education. As a child development teacher, I am proud of the dedication my students show in their work with young children, and I hope this scholarship helps them follow their passion. I would invest the remaining funds in an account for my son to help secure his future. I am grateful for the opportunity to pay it forward.
