Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of the impact teachers had on my life. I grew up as a very shy, reserved kid who didn’t like to talk to adults. There were some teachers in my life who helped me open up and share my voice. These teachers had a profound effect on my learning and life growing up. I want to help students feel the same way as I help them navigate tough times. As they become confident in how the world works scientifically, they can be more confident in themselves.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

8th graders are tested by the state in science for Ohio. As a young teacher, I am still learning how to present knowledge in a way that isn’t teaching towards a test but still covering everything the state tells me they must know. It’s easy for me to get caught up in this cycle and lost focus on why I originally decided to teach. I had a student tell me during a study hall period that I am like a big brother to him. This brought what I do completely back into perspective.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I am currently closing on my first house, I’m getting married to my high school sweetheart in a few months, and I have just started paying on my student loans. This money would help me start the life that I feel my fiancée deserves and ease our financial aid in a time where it’s very difficult to get on your feet.
