As an art educator, I know the transformative power of education and creativity. Growing up in poverty with little support, school was my safe haven, and art gave me purpose. I teach to be the person I needed as a child—someone who fosters safety, love, and belonging. I believe in the power of art to heal, inspire, and connect humanity. By nurturing creativity and encouraging self-expression, I help students discover their voices, build confidence, and find hope, just as art once did for me.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceMy most memorable moments aren’t just about teaching—they’re about doing what’s right. I led a petition with hundreds of voices for a teacher, fought for marginalized youth and students with IEPs, and took a fight to the federal level. I stood before a school board holding a sign that read, ‘We told you we were afraid.’ I’ve fought for budgets, content alignment, technology, and grants to save underfunded art programs. I teach, but I also see a need—and fill it.
What would you do with the $25,000?If I were awarded the $25,000 prize, I would use it to create lasting impact as I would first address my financial debt and fund some of my PhD in Art Ed, which is my life dream being a HS drop out! I would invest in my dream of having "free wall" that is open for public painting use, to solve the problem of finding a space for young street and graffiti artists to have a voice. Finally, I plan to fund a project that will advance my school by buying a robot we program to draw or a laser cutter!
