Tell us why you became a teacher

My mom emphasized education as a means to upward mobility. In first grade, I was diagnosed with low vision and transferred to a school for the blind. My education took off. I was in a place where teachers didn’t expect me to see the way they taught, but rather, they taught the way I saw. I decided at age 9 or 10 that I wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to be able to reach students that had trouble accessing education. As I continued my education, this desire to teach only grew.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Seeing a child's power turn encourages my life’s journey. Bria, a second grader, gave me a note, as she said, “I know you can’t read it.” I read over the letters she had painstakingly put on the paper which used many of the lessons I had taught that year. I nearly cried as I read her words. Thnk yu for hep me lern to rede and rite. I turned to her and said, “I was happy to read it; your hard work helped you.” The smile on her face as she whispered, “you can read it?” was payment enough.

What would you do with the $25,000?

While $25,000 may not be much in these days for some, It would help with my retirement days. That is more than I earned in my first full-time teaching position. Most recently my home faced much storm damage which was not covered by insurance. That money could be used to cover the fence and window repairs which I had to finance. This would leave some money to help with daily expenses. As I step into retirement, I am trusting in God’s abundant mercy and goodwill.
