Tell us why you became a teacher

My parents have always been an inspiration. My mom didn’t have to be a stay at home mom after my youngest sibling was able to go to and from school on his own. She decided to become a teachers aid. I was going to Nassau Community College trying to figure out my life. At the end of my second year of college I decided to become a physical education teacher. I spent my summers as a teachers aid until I made a career as a physical education teacher in Brooklyn. Best decision of my life.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable experience as a teachers was teaching students locomotor movements in class. I had this one student in 1st grade who did not know how to skip. I spoke to the class about the cues to skip, which was step then hop. I gave a demonstration to the class. I saw her trying and I went beside her and talked to her about the cues while skipping next to her. After 15 seconds of her struggling she finally came around and was skipping. Best moment ever for me.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I believe in rewarding children. I would probably donate $5000 dollars to the school for different rubber duckies that I give to kids as rewards for demonstrating, conquering and describing different experiences in class. Every student has a different story and they need to be heard in different ways! As I have the kids yell out in class… I say “Who are we?” The kids yell back to each other…..209!!!!! It really gets them and me going. Let’s go 209!
