Tell us why you became a teacher

I originally became a substitute teacher b/c there was an opening at a school & I needed a job. W/in 3 weeks, I fell in love. A student had a neurological event & I supported him through the experience. 2 people, who would become my bosses, were there with me. A couple of days later, a position as an associate teacher in 2nd grade opened, & they asked me to step in. This made me fall even more in love w/ teaching. I went back to school for my masters, and I am now a lead teacher for 3rd grade.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My undergrad is in film. I brought script writing & filming to our school as an extra curricular. It's so much fun to teach about storytelling & how to take words & make them into a short visual film. 1 assignment I brought to my class was writing comedy skits that we later filmed. Supporting the students through the process & bringing in writers & directors to give them ideas was such an immersive unit, & it's something I've continued to do every year b/c of how much the kids love it.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Being a teacher is so rewarding, and there's nothing that brings me more joy than supporting kids through their academic and social development. I'm so grateful to have a job and a consistent paycheck, and getting this money would help support my ability to start building up my savings and retirement accounts. That's something I haven't had the ability to do yet. I always pick up coaching, tutoring, and summer school to help support myself, and this would make a world of difference!
