I was involved in a tragic car accident in high school. My dominant hand was left nearly without any function at all. I was soon after awarded the opportunity to work with the special needs students at a school nearby. I was able to see how these students were so joyful despite the physical and mental limitations that they faced. They taught me to be thankful for what I have and that my challenge was truly a blessing in disguise for my future to become a teacher.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I was working with an autistic student who presented multiple challenges each day. There was refusal, many moments of acting out, and even situation where myself and the students around me were unsafe. I felt that this was not the end for this student, that this student was more capable than what was being shown. I tried so many strategies and failed each time. Until I was able to sit and get to know this student is when I finally had a break through and allowed the student to be successful.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would give back to the special needs program at the school that I was able to interact with the special needs students after my car wreck and injury as a thank you for the new perspective and realization that educating was my true calling and purpose.
