Tell us why you became a teacher

I wanted to become a teacher after being a daycare worker in 2018. Two days after graduating high school, I started a job at my local daycare and since then I have absolutely loved working with children. I have been teaching kindergarten for the past two years and I love seeing all the growth they make throughout the year. They come in, not knowing their letters and they leave being able to read. They come in not knowing what a number is and leave being able to add/subtract! It’s amazing!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience would have to be during my first year teaching kindergarten, a student came up to me and told me that she loved being in my class and it makes her feel a little bit better being OK with being away from her mother because I make her feel safe. I thrive to make my classroom a kind, warm, safe environment and that child showed me that I was accomplishing my goal.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Wow if I was lucky enough to win the $25,000, I could do so much in my classroom. With an average class size of 25 kids every year I go through books and supplies like crazy. I would be able to get more social/emotional tools, More hands-on alphabet mats for phonics, so many things to better my students. I would also be able to provide my students books for their homes to read with families because a lot of my kids don’t have books at home. The ideas are endless! I would be so grateful!
