Kathryn Herron

I've been an educator for over 20 years and I love those "Aha" moments when my students get it and excel at the lessons I'm teaching.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I’ve been working with students who learn differently for eleven years. Most of my students have also had a physical setback as well. I became a teacher to educate my students as well as their peers to show everyone they are all kids, some kids need different communication devices and they need different education lessons. All students can learn no matter and I want to have a role in helping them. I am a seven year Breast Cancer survivor, I owe my attitude to my students!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Wow there’s been so many. I guess I would have to say that I had a parent of a student with autism call the school in a panic. They had to go out of the country for a month and were afraid their son would lose his spot in the program I teach. The parents said their son had learned so much in the short time I had been teaching. He was counting and reading the alphabet out loud among other things social and educational . This student was previously nonverbal. I assured them that he would not lose.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Wow, I’d definitely buy some classroom supplies (communication devices) and I’d finish my masters degree and probably pay some bills.
