Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of my role model; my maternal grandmother. She taught science in Detroit schools and inspired my life long thirst for knowledge. When my grandmother had summers off, she would take me all over to explore the natural wonders. I spent summers outside learning through my natural curiosity. Many students do not have the same privilege. I honor my grandmother's legacy by making a positive impact on my students' lives, inspire curiosity, and foster a love of learning.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I have been teaching for 15 years, and my most memorable teaching experience is from a field trip to the zoo. We explored the behind the scenes at the zoo. My students met a veterinarian and were able to ask questions about the animals care. We went to the feeding area and my students chopped vegetables for the animals (then we watched the chimpanzees eat). We learned about how the zookeepers "hide" the food to stimulate the animals minds and designed a toy for an animal habitat.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would participate in some Bookbag Tours. Bookbag Tours provides quality professional development through immersive travel experiences for educators. The trips offer a truly global perspective, allowing participants to gain insights that enrich their classrooms and lives. I would love to explore other countries educational systems and bring back that knowledge to my school district.
