Tell us why you became a teacher

I have always been passionate about helping others. From the time I was in elementary school, I remember wanting to be a teacher and participating in a reading program to help younger kids. As I got older, I did not go to school for teaching. I received my degree in psychology and went into social work, however, I still felt the call to teach. I switched careers and am in my 9th year of teaching. I love being able to make an impact on the learning and development of my students.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One moment that will always stand out is when a student chose me for her Hero Award at the end of her senior year. She was moved into my class late, and I saw her potential for her to do well in my AP class. I encouraged her to switch, and she ended up loving psychology so much that she has since gone on to ger her master's. Until I received the award with a heartfelt letter, I didn't realize that her father passed away shortly before entering my class and how big of a positive influence I had.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I just got married less than a month ago, and my new husband and I are trying to save to buy a house. It's very difficult to do on a teacher's salary, even if my husband has a higher paying job. We have 3 kids between the both of us, and I would use a significant portion of the money to put towards a down payment of a house. I also take students on trips through EF Tours. I would like to offer a travel scholarship to help make it possible for students that can't afford to go on those trips.
