Tell us why you became a teacher

I had no plans to be a teacher! When a school near me needed a long-term sub, I took the job as a favor to a friend and ended up LOVING it, and immediately knew I needed to change careers. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching students grow through struggle and helping them reflect on the value of that struggle. Often, people think everything should be easy, but the ability to handle uncertainty is an important part of the learning process—and a vital skill!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

When I was fairly new to teaching, I had a student who often caused distractions in class. I spoke with her mother, who was very dismissive; the mother’s attitude led me to consider what the student might be dealing with outside of the classroom and approach her in a different way. The student and I were able to have a great conversation and build a relationship, which led to her being better able to learn from me. It was a rewarding, transformative experience.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’d probably use some of it to pay off some debts (student loans, etc.), but I’d also donate some of it to my school to be used for specific projects: safety materials to make our classrooms more secure, and upgraded musical instruments and A/V equipment for our music program and auditorium. If there was any left, I’d love to donate it to the public schools in my city to pay off student lunch debts.
