Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I love spending time with children and watching them grow and develop. I knew I needed a career where I could positively impact young children and see them learn together. I became a teacher to make a difference in the lives of children who don’t have as much support at home or who don’t feel as loved as others. Being a teacher has given me the opportunity to show children the love and support they need to learn and develop into their true self.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was with a first grade student who teachers often had a difficult time connecting with and fostering a meaningful learning community. I was able to make a connection early on with this student, as the reading specialist, and was able to get him to engage in lessons and activities in my room. One day he told me that the only reason he likes to come to school is to come to my reading group and that he doesn’t like school work, but likes working with me.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would use part of the money to make my classroom the most welcoming and engaging room I could. I would purchase more flexible seating options, classroom materials/tools, and a classroom library with newer and more exciting books, to help develop the love of reading. I would also use some of the money to donate to the families in need at the school I work in. Many families experience poverty in the area and are looking for necessities to help take care of their children.
