Tell us why you became a teacher

I have always loved working with children and I love when a student finds that "light bulb" moment. It is also enlightening when you witness a student work through a personal problem with the tools you have provided them, and they - in turn - help another student. I was inspired by my 2nd-grade teacher. I loved and appreciated how welcome and safe she made us feel, but mostly loved carpet reading time! I incorporate reading into my classroom today!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

So many, it's hard to choose! I loved the "family" community working at Union High School. I learned open communication and collaboration are key to not only successful lessons but also student learning. I gained confidence when working at Coloma Intermediate Schools. My principal encouraged, supported, and enforced my knowledge and ideas for special education law and a movement toward incorporating co-teaching. Also the support of my sped and hallway team at St. Joseph!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would love to say that I would use it all on myself for self-care! It will definitely go towards paying bills! We are also fixing our home, and will probably put some of it towards that. However, I will probably put some into my classroom. I have requested flexible seat funding for my special ed classroom, in St. Joseph Public Schools. I would like to get a few seating items, lights, and sensory tools for my room.
