Teaching was never part of my plan. After college, I spent three years in Finance before my wife and I moved to Ozark for her to attend grad school. While considering a career change, she and mentors from our church encouraged me to explore teaching. We made significant life adjustments so I could work as a paraprofessional and earn my non-traditional teaching certification. Though I never envisioned becoming an educator, it has proven to be the most fulfilling career I could have ever asked for

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Having a space where students feel safe, valued, and excited to learn, makes each day exciting. This year, my peer-to-peer mentor program has been incredible to watch students help each other. A particular student has flourished in this role. They patiently assist classmates and have increased the mathematical fluency of class. Watching them grow as a leader, teacher, and friend has been my favorite part of teaching. Through teaching others, this student has grown exponentially.

What would you do with the $25,000?

In Ozark, we have a growing and underserved student population of ELL (English Language Learner) students. Specifically, Russian and Ukrainian students. Google Translate on Ipads only gets you so far. Our district needs translation devices so we can communicate with both these students and their parents. Timekettle provides simultaneous translating ear pieces where students can hear large group instruction in their language. These devices would bridge the learning gap/prevent isolation.
