Tell us why you became a teacher

Like most teachers, I became an educator because of a great teacher who changed my life. Mr. Bass was my escape in my small-town New Hampshire elementary school. In his art studio, I found solace from peer ridicule and discovered a passion for creativity. His influence led me to pursue a degree in ceramics. After graduating, I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps. Today, I channel his kindness and inspiration, creating a safe and empowering space for my own students every day.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

In my short tenure, I’ve been blessed with unforgettable moments—seeing a student’s artwork published, hosting Jeff Koons as he inspired my scholars, and watching families celebrate their children’s art at shows. But my favorite moments are the quiet breakthroughs—a kindergartener discovering their creativity in the studio. Those moments remind me why I do this and give me strength, even on the most challenging and frustrating days.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If awarded the $25,000 prize, I would invest in further education and professional development to become a more effective and inspiring teacher. I would also pay off student debt, allowing me to focus fully on nurturing my students' creativity and confidence. This prize would not only impact my own life but also enable me to dedicate even more energy and passion to empowering the next generation of young artists, ensuring they have the support and inspiration to thrive.
