Tell us why you became a teacher

Teaching runs in my family - both my mother and stepfather taught. And when I think about the people who have made the deepest impact in my life, I always remember those teachers who were able to connect with me and to show me something new about the world. When I was laid off in my early 30's from a tech job, I decided that I wanted to do something meaningful and significant with my life - and to me there is no greater profession than that of a teacher. I get to share my enthusiasm every day.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I have so many! From my very first day in my own classroom 20 years ago to this moment right now - having just taught Hamlet to my 12th graders - every day as a public school teacher is memorable. I keep a folder full of notes and cards that my students have given me over the years, and not a day goes by that I don't run into a former student in town or chat with one online. I guess I'm most proud of seeing my students grow up and become these incredible people; knowing I played a tiny part.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Easy - full blown school library of student and faculty and parent chosen books, plus comfy chairs for folks to pull up a book and read in. Everyone needs access to highly readable books - after all books changed my life and they're why I teach English. And, maybe an espresso machine and a massage chair for my colleagues and I?
