Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to help kids discover how their passions can lead to extraordinary lives. Too often, kids aren't shown the possibilities—like a violinist who could one day score films or a LEGO enthusiast who might one day engineer a Mars rover. My goal is to make sure none of my students look back in 30 years and say, "I wish someone would have told me I could have done THAT with my interests." I want them to see the possibilities now—and chase them fearlessly.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

It would have to be the first time I published a book with my class while undergoing cancer treatment. The book, an illustrated collection of mantras for marathon runners, was all about resilience and grit—qualities I leaned on daily and wanted to instill in my students. We explored careers in writing and design, met local book publishers, and learned the power of storytelling. Seeing their names as published authors gave them pride, and selling the book even raised funds for our school’s PTC.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My cancer fight erased the life my wife once dreamed of—studying marine life, diving with great white sharks. She gave it up for stability, for our family, for me. But she still loves the ocean. So with $25,000, I’d take her to the Neptune Islands to dive with great whites—and get her the certifications and equipment she needs to make it a habit. Because after years of sacrifice and caregiving, she deserves the chance to step into the life she once dreamed of.
