Tell us why you became a teacher

I received my bachelors in education. I knew I wanted to work with children and help them be successful. My high passion for music drove me back to school to get my music teaching degree. Music drives my commitment to excellence in teaching. I was trained in classical piano and traveled with a rock band. I hold extensive knowledge in various musical genres and instruments. This diverse background allows me to tailor my teaching methods to meet the unique needs and interests of each student.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Over 29 years, I have had the privilege of nurturing students' musical talents and fostering their love for music. My teaching philosophy centers on exploring their creativity, develop their skills, and gain confidence in their musical abilities. I moved from a very privileged school to the lowest socioeconomic school in the valley. My empathy has grown! Giving these “shelter” kids a creative outlet has been more fulfilling than any other venue. They are learning to use music to get through.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would buy instruments to give to every student I can. Right now my students own recorders which played correctly can be lovely instruments. I’d love to give away ukuleles and mini keyboards with headphones. Perhaps I’d give away drumsticks as well. I believe getting instruments into the hands of children helps them to understand and apply the skills and drills of elementary school music. I believe they’d find success in their creative outlet!
