After 29 years of teaching, I’ll admit it’s a challenging job, but the rewarding moments of a student making that connection, is priceless!

Tell us why you became a teacher

I had several teachers in elementary that were such positive influences on me! They really listened to me and cared about my learning. I struggled in reading in 1st and 2nd grade and was behind grade level. Mrs. Thorpe made sure I read with someone every day until I was one of the best readers in class. This led to my love of English and reading and then my mom went to college to become a high school English teacher. As I watched her go to work everyday, I noticed how much she loved her job!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my 12th grade students told me how much he hated school and that he wasn’t going to college. I told him that “once you find your passion, you’ll like what you’re learning and you’ll enjoy school” and “to keep an open mind because I knew he was smart and was going places!” I saw him 3 years later and he excitedly said “thank you for believing in me!” He told me he was in his second year of college and it was because I told him he was smart, giving him the confidence to believe in himself!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would buy some more books for my classroom to share with my students, and encourage more reading. I’ve never been able to afford a trip out of the country to famous places in literature such as England, France, and Greece which would be life changing!! I would also help my daughters pay for their college so that they can learn and excel in a future career of their choice. My grandma was a teacher, my mom was a teacher, I’m a teacher and now one of my daughters wants to become a teacher too.❤️
