Tell us why you became a teacher

After earning a BFA in Performance, I began substitute teaching to maintain flexibility while auditioning. As I filled in across different roles, I found myself drawn to English Language Learners and their unique journeys. Helping ELLs find their voice in a new world was so fulfilling that I pivoted into a TESOL Master's Program, ultimately becoming a language teacher and advocate for those navigating language barriers and cultural transitions.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Last year, I ran into Nashla, a former student who had gifted me a portrait of myself when she was a 3rd grader learning English. When I told her told I still have her drawing framed on my desk, she teared up & shared she’d be majoring in Art in the Fall. This full-circle moment reminded me of the lasting impact we have on our students. It reaffirmed my belief in nurturing each child's unique voice and potential and reminded me of the importance of building lasting relationships.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would sponsor a Grade Level Trip to The Statue of Liberty to explore the history of immigration, a topic central to many of my students' lives. The experience would deepen their understanding of American history and their own identities. The rest would go into my sons' college accounts, reinforcing my commitment to education as a guiding force in all of our lives.
