I didn't always know I was going to be a teacher. My mother was a teacher, and I admired the way she made an impact on her students’ lives. Growing up, I did not mind being at school. I enjoyed the routine, the chance to learn something new every day, and the way my teachers inspired me to think beyond the classroom. I majored in history because I really loved the subject, and the path that opened up to me was teaching. It just felt right!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences was a field trip to the St. Pete Pier. I work in a high-poverty, high-need school in St. Petersburg, Florida, where many of my students have limited opportunities to explore beyond their surroundings. What would you do with the $25,000?

Winning a $25,000 award as an educator is an incredible honor and an opportunity to make a lasting impact on my students, my classroom, and my school community. If I had this award, I would use it to create experiences and opportunities that many of my students might not otherwise have. One of my biggest priorities would be organizing meaningful field trips. I work in a high-poverty, high-need school, and many of my students have never had the chance to visit!
