Tell us why you became a teacher

When I was in elementary school, I knew I wanted to be a teacher because there isn’t many Deaf teachers who could serve as role models for both Deaf and hearing students. I now work at a school with a Deaf Education program, where I have a few Deaf students in my class. I also teach hearing students how to communicate and collaborate effectively with their Deaf peers. Also, I encourage them to consider becoming ASL interpreters, as Washington state is experiencing a shortage of interpreters.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I have so many great memories with my students, but one of the most rewarding experiences has been teaching ABC stories in ASL. Seeing students get creative and truly enjoy the storytelling is one of the best parts of teaching. Two years, my students’ hard work and creativity paid off when we won first place in the state ASL competition.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the funds to support Deaf owned businesses by purchasing classroom posters, decor, and other educational materials. Additionally, I would invest in resources that enhance accessiblily for my students such as a visual learning tools, ASL storybooks, and technology that supports interactive learning. I would also love to bring in Deaf guest speakers, and performers to inspire my students and provide real world exposure to Deaf culture.
