Tell us why you became a teacher

I love kids. They have fascinating insights into the world and their innocent take on life (even the teenagers I spend my days with) is truly heartwarming. That & I genuinely love the noise of the classroom. The sound of students working through a lab and the excitement in their voices when they figure out a problem that has been troubling them (be it academic or personal). I get energy from my students (don't get me wrong, they drain it on some days as well) & they keep me young at heart.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My moment came from one of my most rough and tumble students. He was full of potential but struggled a lot as a freshman. One day, he unenrolled & my heart sank. Three years later, I hear a familiar voice calling my name and turn to a GIANT hug from this very kid- only not a kid anymore. He had received his diploma early, got a welding certification, & was working in the area. He said he had to tell me in person because I had been the voice in his head reminding him he could do anything.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My own child has always wanted to visit one of his former teachers who now lives in Spain, but that is really hard to do on a teacher's salary. I would LOVE to make that a reality for him. Teaching is a part of who I am, & that often comes at a cost to other parts of my life, mostly my family. So, the opportunity to take this trip would fulfill his wish and give me some much-needed recharge time with people I love & who love me. AND I'm definitely buying some cool science stuff for my classes!
