Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I’ve always had a passion for advocating for communities that are underserved. It has always been a dream of mine to give back to the community that educated me as a first generation in this country. I knew that by becoming a teacher, I would have a lasting impact on students and encourage them to pursue post secondary education. Knowledge is wealth, and I fully believe that if students are provided with a structured education, they can break generational poverty.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I am a special education teacher in a title one school and I service students who have a variety of learning disabilities. My most memorable teaching experience would be when I finally started seeing my students demonstrate academic growth in all areas of their learning. Being able to witness my students meet grade level standards and build their confidence is why I love this career. It is my philosophy that all students can learn at high levels if they are given the opportunity and exposure.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were to win the $25,000 I would honestly put it towards purchasing my first home. As a first generation educator in this country, I would love the opportunity to have the power to purchase a home and not have to worry about saving money for years on my teacher salary. I have been saving money since I began my career but it still doesn’t seem to be enough to buy a home with a monthly mortgage that I would be able to afford. It is a dream of mine to one day become a homeowner.
