Learn MoreI became a teacher to help students find their voice and purpose in life. I am from a family of teachers who advocate that education can be a great equalizer where gaps in equity exist. I teach in an urban setting where many students do not start off thinking they have many options for careers and continuing education. Helping students learn about themselves and the world they live in as they experience content makes connections that last. I became a teacher to promote equity and justice.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceI coached the East High Speech and Debate team for 16 years, and we were the underdogs for many years. We didn't have the fancy budgets, dress clothes, or go to special camps, but we still argued really well as a team. Every Valentines Day weekend, there was a competition that determined who earned a spot at nationals. I'm so proud of my team whether they qualified because they worked together and spoke their truth. Coaching students to develop their minds and speaking skills was great.
What would you do with the $25,000?This money would allow me the ability to travel and experience more of the world. I'm working to pay off my debts on a plan now, that will allow me to live modestly once I retire, but I've never really been able to explore other cultures outside of the United States. Seeing places that I have read about in the fiction and non fiction that I have my students read and explore could add another dimension to my teaching and connecting with students.
