Being a special educator is more than being a teacher. It’s being a friend, mentor, cheerleader, parent figure to those who need it most.

Register NowI got my BS in psychology from a university that required volunteer hours. I started volunteering in a class for students with autism. After spending time with these students I knew that this was my calling. I saw students being educated in a flawed system and was determined that I could provide these students with a more appropriate education. I felt that these students were forgotten and isolated because they learned differently. I have spent the last 25 years working to include all students.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceOne of my favorite stories as a special educator is when I would take students out to lunch as a special award for turning in hw, good behavior, etc. I worked with children of refugees in a very low socioeconomic school in Fresno, Ca. Many of these students had never been to a restaurant before. I took one sweet little girl to Red Robin. I ordered some french fries with ranch on the side. I can still remember the look of pure bliss as she tasted ranch for the first time.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would spend the money on a new car. I commute over 75 miles round trip each day to work. I could really use a new gas-efficient vehicle.
