I became a teacher because I wanted to help children with special needs believe in themselves, develop confidence and skills, and discover how they learn and how they show their understanding and knowledge. I had extensive experience working with people with special needs and wanted to do more to help.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceApplying behavior strategies as well as incorporating components of occupational therapy I had been taught, I was able to have a break through with a special needs child who would not stop hitting and throwing. When I realized he was dysregulated and his body was telling him he needed to throw, we started seeing those cues and would play catch with him. I could visibly see his body relax and watch him re-regulate visibly in front of my eyes! His aggression towards his peers is very limited now.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would restock my classroom with more sensory components and more intentional items and multipurpose toys, as well as more flexible seating options. I would also love to get more supplies and materials for crafts and multi-sensory activities with my students.
