During the pandemic, while all else halted, one aspect of theatre stayed vibrant—educational theatre. Unlike commercial theatre, which revolves around profit, educational theatre is dedicated to amplifying student voices and fostering their creative growth. I began working with students aged 4-20 in both CPS and the Illinois Youth Detention Center. My mission was not only to create art but to help guide the next generation of artists, allowing them to discover themselves through art they create.

I believe theatre can be a tool in which to teach students skills. I noticed a majority of my K-2 students were struggling to tie their shoes, so what did we do? Make a play about it! We learned a monologue, poem, and song, and the grand finale of our performance was tying our shoes! Theatre can help students who struggle in other classes feel successful.

So. Much. I would use the funds to pay for my Master’s in Literacy, with the goal of helping my students learn the science of reading through Reader’s Theatre. Given the current national literacy rate, I believe it’s crucial to integrate reading comprehension across all subjects.. Additionally, I’d create a costume, props, and tech closet FILLED with resources for all grade levels! Any leftover money would go towards revitalizing our auditorium with risers, lighting, and sound equipment!
