Janelle Platt

I went back to school in my 40's to become a Special Education teacher. My passion is to find the key that unlocks each child's potential.

Tell us why you became a teacher

My daughter inspired me to become an educator. She experiences Autism, and while many said she couldn't... I believed she could. With hard work and determination, she exceeded what her doctors ever thought she could. I wanted to give the same drive and passion I had for her growing up to other children that needed someone on their side.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had a student that would not come out from under a table in their general education classroom. He didn't trust easily and was in the foster care system. I knew that he loved Minecraft so I created a math Minecraft world on my ipad and crawled under the table with him. Slowly, over time, he came to trust me and eventually he came out from under the table and would do math with me each day. Gaining his trust allowed me to extend it to his teacher letting him experience school in a whole new way.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the money to buy supplies for my classroom as well as help pay off my children's school debt. It would be an honor to be chosen.
